The Ref (1994)
A Mini Movie Review by Dave Randal
Plot: A burglar is forced to take a bickering and dysfunctional family hostage on Christmas Eve.
Denis Leary stars in this dark comedy as a burglar who holds a dysfunctional family hostage after a robbery goes bad. I wouldn't exactly call Denis Leary a great actor, but he is a really funny stand up comic and can rant better than just about anybody. As an actor he doesn't have a ton of range although I don't think it really matters especially when he plays pissed off ranting assholes like he does here.
There isn't a whole lot to the story, but the characters are developed pretty well considering that it clocks in at 93 minutes. Kevin Spacey and Judy Davis are great as a bickering couple that have to be unintentionally counseled by Leary's character. Leary's character basically just has to be brutally honest and yell at the couple by telling them how good they have it. The movie gets even better when Kevin Spacey's annoying and snobby extended family shows up for Christmas dinner.
Most people have probably heard of this, but it is still considered somewhat obscure. The ending might seem a little dumb to some, but overall the movie is really good. I would highly recommend it.
