Leatherface: Texas Chainsaw Massacre III (1990)
A Mini Movie Review by Dave Randal
Plot: A California couple and a survivalist encounter the cannibal Sawyer family.
Out of all the movies in the Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise, this movie is in my top three right after the original and the remake. This is the first movie in the franchise that kind of plays up the family of Leatherface. Although the original and it's sequel play up the family as well to an extent, I think this movie really pulls it off well.
Kate Hodge and William Butler play a couple from California traveling through Texas. Neither of them are exceptionally good in the movie, but neither of them are bad either. They run into a hitchhiker named Tex, played by a then unknown Viggo Mortenson, at a gas station. Everything is alright until they run into the sadistic family known as the Sawyers. I think using the Sawyer family in this movie is what really makes me like it. Instead of just being a run of the mill basic chainsaw killer movie, they go a bit further and have a family of sadistic killers.
Another character also in the movie is Ken Foree playing a survivalist who rounds out the movie really well when it comes to characters. I would say that Foree and Mortenson both give great performances in this movie. The movie itself was marketed as a sequel to The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 (1986), but it is really more of a reboot than a sequel.
Overall it is a pretty decent horror movie and it had a lot of elements that I like in a horror movie. It is a pretty cliched way in how they do it, but they actually do some character development with Kate Hodge's character that I really liked. Even though Tobe Hooper didn't have anything to do with this one, I think it was a good addition to the franchise.
